Blog Post 12: Hangover and Grazian
The movie The Hangover and Grazian article "The Girl Hunt Urban Nightlife and the Performance of Masculinity as Collective Activity" both touch on similar ideas of the friendship men share. Grazian in his article points out the things that males do before going out. They play rap music and "pregame" by making sure they are dress appropiate and have drinks before going out. The guys stick together and help each other pick up girls and have fun with eatch other just "bonding". In Hangover it touches on some of the same ideas Grazian had. Four friends in Vegas for a bachelor party for Doug. Before they went out they got all dress up and Phil even expressed his disapproval of Alan wearing that man purse. All four friends went and "pregamed" having drinks on the roof of the hotel before going out to party. In"The Girl Hunt Urban Nightlife and the Performance of Masculinity as Collective Activity" it says "pregaming is a bonding ritual that fosters social cohension and builds confidence among young men in confidence among young men in anticipation of the challenge that accompany the girl hunt" (326 Grazian) Alan cutting his hand and giving a sppech about them being his friends for life this quote can also apply to Stu because him drinking gave him more confidence he married the stripper and pulled out his tooth because Alan dared him something he wouldn't normally do if he was sober. Grazian also says " the performance of masculinity does not require successfully meeting a potential sex partner as long as one enthusiastically participates in the ritual motions of the girl hunt in the company of men."(326) which in the movie the guys went to the strip club and were looking for hookers together. Like Grazian says men need each other which is proven in The Hangover they needed Phil to drive all over the place, Alan to win the money to get the other Doug back from the chinese guy who helped Stu figure out that Doug was on the roof.

Blogost #8: The Glass Escalator Effect
Men that are in female professions due to being judge and criticized for having a womens job will desire to get a promotion and move on to a higher position. They are also put on this "glass escalator" due to social pressure men are encouraged and pressured to apply for higher positions and are more likely to move up in their job because there's no competition if their in a female profession, also to be in a more dominate position and because men are sometimes perfered. Men seem to have to work harder to stay in the same position then to get a promotion.

The article The Glass Escalator: Hidden Advantages for Men's in the Female Professions is about men in female professions. Due to the "glass escalator" men are likely to be promoted than females are and can also advance in a female profession easier.
The author Christine L. Williams studies gender, race and class inequality in the workplace. She teaches course in gender, sexualities, labor and labor movements. Christine L Williams is the Chair of the Publications Committee and the Chair of the Organizations, Occupations, and Work Section of the American Sociological Association.
The article shows that males have it easier.Christine L.Williams points out that "men are "kicked up the stairs" to more prestige better paying jobs"(212).Men have it both ways because they are not always wanted in a female profession so they are encourage to advance and they also experience affirmative action so they have a job either way.

Course Reflection
1.The assignment that was fun to do was the blog post because it was your own ideas and there was no right or wrong answer. It was also interesting to see other classmates opinions on the class readings. I learn that there is no one opinion everybody has a different perspective on things.
2.The one assignment I didn't care for was the photo essay because I didn't get the point and I felt there wasn't alot to write about from a photo.
3.Yes, because in case you miss something you could always go back and look at it. Everything was always there on the computer and accessible. It was easier to type on the computer then write by hand.
4. There are no assignments that I would have like to have done.

Coltrane: Blog Post #9
It's important to have a father figure in a child's life. As Coltrane stated " When fathers are active in infant care boys develop an intimate knowledge of masculinity"(433). It's different then when a woman tries to teach a male how to be one, rather than a man actually showing the child. A girl also should have a father figure also because it is said that some girls look for the love and attention in a man that they don't get from their own dads. And it's good for a child to know that some of the things they can't talk about with their mom they can talk to their dad about it and have the support from them as well.

Chicano Men and Masculinity Blog Post #7
In Zinn's article "Chicano Men and Masculinity" it does seem as if the Chicano man needs to prove his manhood to let his wife and children know that he is the man of the house, because when he's outside of his house he doesn't get the same respect from his boss,co-workers and/or people in general that he would get from his family. But, when Zinn points out the "definitive characteristics of a Chicano Man(Zinn 24)" I don't really see the difference between any other male. Isn't the male suppose to be the dominant one and be the "family provider, protect and judge(Zinn 24)"? Zinn states "presumably, he is perpetually obsessed with the need to prove his manhood, oftentimes through fighting excessive drinking and/or extramarital affairs(24). That's with all males not just Chicano men. I thought this was what masculinity is suppose to be about the male being a provider for their family, the wife and children respecting their husband, the male being the dominant and aggressive one, and him being the man of the house.

Blog Post #5: All Men Are Not Created Equal
I think the reason why Marable and Espiritu mention women throughout the readings is to show that women of different races are accepted in America than men of different races. Its like women of a different color can get further than a male can in America. Also, being that both Asian and Black men were gone from they're family the women took the role of being mothers and fathers. The women worked and came home and did there household chores and took over all the responsibility so the male had no significance because the women learned how to adapt to life without their husbands. That played a role in why Asian men would beat there wives and Black males find it hard to express there emotions to their women because even though it wasn't intentionally women played a role in striping both men of there masculinity.

Who's The Man ?
Theroux piece The Male Myth and Marable The Black Male : Searching Beyond Stereotypes compare because they believe there is alot expected out of males. In both pieces they state that the male is taught to be unemotional and have insecurities and fear to be who they are because what they are told throughout life. Theroux believe that males are taught that they have to not show emotion in order to be manly. Marable believes that because of what the black male experienced through slavery watching there family be seperated and being beaten and castrated and strip of their masculinity that it made it hard for them to show emotion.

Blog Post #4
Throughout history there has always been stereo types of the black male. In Marable Manning reading he points out what white men thought of blacks as slaves. An insteresting piece I came across in the reading was how even tho the white man said that the black men were uneducated the black male actually contributed by doing what the white men couldn't like "Africans were the first to cultivate wheat on the continent; they showed their illerate masters how to grow indigo, rice, and cotton their extensive knowledge of herbs and roots provided colonist with medicines and perservatives for supplies" (17). The reason why this so interesting because Marable points out the fact that white men wasn't as educated back then as they want people to believe being that they didn't have the knowlege of basic farming.

The Male Myth Blog Post#3
I don't agree with most of the examples Paul Theroux believes are expected of a man. To me Paul Theroux sounds like a bitter guy who fell short at being manly. I think that maybe his parents or peers made him feel like he was inadequate. For Theroux to feel as if the expression "Be a man!"(101) to be insulting and abusive and mean "be stupid, be unfeeling, obedient, and solderily and stop thinking"strikes me as a man that's scorn. Most of his examples are directed at what America views as manly which makes me also believe that his rant is not directed at masculinity and being a man but more of what he feels America portray as a masculine man throughout his whole piece he speaks of America in a negative way ie. "The whole idea of manhood in America is pitiful. (101),"It doesn't suprise me when the President of the US dresses like a cowboy-it shows a measure of his insecurity and his willingness to please"(103). "American culture does little for a man than prepare him for modeling clothes in the L.L Bean catalouge"(103)."American writer typically has been so at pains to prove his manliness"(103) etc. Maybe I'm wrong about his parents and friends making him feel inadequate maybe it's just America protrayal of what's manly that's makes him feel such ill feelings towards being a man. That leaves me to wonder all the different examples that America protrayed as manly is Theroux upset he doesn't fit in to at least one ?! Yes I think that Theroux is suggesting that men in other countries and cultures have more freedom when it comes to masculinity because it seems as if he feels America ask to much of men in other cultures and countries masculinity is not as important.

Do We Construct Gender? Blog Post #2
Gender as we know it is being a male or a female. In Judith Lorber Night To His Day the part that I found that shows we construct gender is when she was talking about the parents who raised an accidental transsexual and was successful in making the child a female and making her as feminine as possible. Even though that's only one story out of many I have come to think that it is possible that you can teach a child throughout their life what gender to become you can turn your son into your daughter because "the social construction of gender overrides any possibly inborn trait"(23). Lorber also points out transvestites who dress up as woman they learn how to be feminine and dress as woman from woman's magazines. I think it doesn't matter how you were born the things that are instilled in you makes you who you are whether it be from media, magazines , parents, friends, to religion it all plays a part in how you are as a person. I'm not sure why the child is considered to be a female rather than a transsexual but I think an adult is considered a transexual because before they underwent surgery they were either a male or female and had a decision to become the sex that they identified more with.Children are not born knowing that their female or male which makes it easier for parents to decide a childs gender and doctors to correct it before the child is old enough to realize. For this child in Lorber's reading she has never identified with being a male, been raised as a male or treated as one. She's been treated and raised all her life as a female she doesn't know anything else but to act as a female would. I guess what I'm trying to say is because a transexual as an adult was a male or a female before they change genders this child only identifies with one gender and thats female.
